「週末」は英語で「weekend」。「week（週）」と「end（終わり）」を組み合わせた言葉で、基本的には土日を指します。

月〜金で学校や仕事に行っている人にとっては、「休み」と同義になることもあります。ただし、サービス業などで土日勤務の人には「weekend=休み」とは限らないので、注意が必要です。

イギリス英語では「at the weekend」、アメリカ英語では「on the weekend」を使うのが一般的。どちらも意味は同じですが、英語を使う相手や文脈に合わせて、適切な表現を選ぶと良いでしょう。

また「on」の場合、「on (the) weekends」のように、複数形にすることも可能です。週末の習慣や習わしについて説明する場合によく用いられます。例えば、「I like to go hiking on (the) weekends」と言えば、「週末にはハイキングに行くのが好きだ」という意味になります。

「over the weekend」も「（特定の）週末に」という意味の表現で、使い方も「at the weekend」や「on the weekend」とほぼ同じです。

ただし、週末の習慣を表す「on (the) weekends」とは異なり、「over the weekend」は複数形にして使いません。単純に特定の土日を指すだけなので注意しましょう。

また、基本的には直近の過去の週末、もしくは現時点が週末であるときに使います。「今週末」という意味での未来の週末を指すのには使わないのが一般的です。
