「手が出ない」は英語では can't compete や can't do anything などで表現することができます。 I couldn't compete with the opponent's play at all. (相手のプレーに全く手が出なかった。) Before the game, I thought that even if I couldn't win, I could do something a little more, but in reality I couldn't do anything.
