質問が細かすぎて答えられない を英語で教えて!

職場で、上司に「お客様からの質問が細かすぎて、うまく答えられませんでした」と言いたいです。

「質問が細かすぎて答えられません」という意味です。相手の質問が専門的すぎたり、前提知識が膨大だったり、あまりに些末な点をついてきたりして、自分の知識や立場では答えようがない、という状況で使えます。少し丁寧で知的な響きがあります。

The customer's question was so granular that I couldn't give them a good answer.
お客様からの質問が細かすぎて、うまく答えられませんでした。

ちなみに、"That's getting too into the weeds for me to answer." は「話が細かすぎて、ちょっと私には答えられないな」というニュアンスです。専門的すぎたり、本筋から逸れた細かい質問をされた時に、やんわりと話を切り上げたい場面で使えます。

構文は、前半は第二文型（主語［customer's question］＋動詞［be動詞］＋主語を補足説明する補語［too detailed：細かすぎる］）で構成します。

後半の等位節は第三文型（主語［I］＋動詞［answer］＋目的語［it］）に副詞（properly）と「couldn't」を加えて否定文にします。

たとえば"The customer's question was too detailed and I couldn't answer it properly."とすれば「お客様の質問が詳細すぎて、適切に回答できませんでした」の意味になりニュアンスが通じます。

また「couldn't」を「wasn't able to」に置き換えて"The customer's question was too detailed and I wasn't able to answer it properly."としても良いです。

否定文は「couldn't」と「wasn't able to」のどちらも使う事ができますが、「could（能力的に出来たこと）」と「was able to（一過的、偶発的に出来たこと）」の使い分けは覚えておきましょう。
