持て余す を英語で教えて！

私は手に余るほど多くを引き受けるつもりだった。試験が思ったよりも簡単だったので、結局余裕が出てしまった。

「Bite off more than you can chew」は、自分が処理・解決できる以上の事柄や問題を引き受けてしまうことを指すイディオムです。無理をしすぎて、結果として状況が悪化したり、仕事などをスムーズに進行させられない状況に陥ることを表します。たとえば、自分のスキルや時間を超えた仕事やプロジェクトを引き受けてしまったときなどに使用されます。

I thought the exam would be tough so I studied too much, I was really in over my head with all the additional time.
試験が難しいと思っていたので、過度に勉強しました。結果的には余った時間で困ってしまいました。

I thought the English proficiency test was going to be hard but I realized I had bitten off more than I could handle, I had a lot of time to spare.
「英語検定試験は難しいと思っていたけど、思った以上にやり過ぎてしまった、たくさんの時間が余ってしまったよ。」

In over your headと"Bite off more than one can handle"は共に能力を超えた状況や課題を指します。"In over your head"は自分がコントロールが効かなくなった状態や理解を超えた状況を指すのに対し、"Bite off more than one can handle"は自分が受け入れることができる以上の責任や課題を引き受けてしまった場合を示します。両方とも困難なシチュエーションを指しますが、"in over your head"は普通、すでにその状態にあることを指し、"Bite off more than one can handle"はそうなる可能性を意味します。

too much = 多すぎる、ありすぎる

ex. I can't read books because I don't have time (on my hands).
※don't have time on my hands = 暇な時間がない
※この意味でのhand は必ず複数形になります。
