The usage of "that"

カテゴリ英語に関する質問

Here are two example sentences:

1. I have an experience that I visited Japan.
2. The experience is that I visited Japan.

I already know that no.1 is grammatically incorrect. That's because you can't use "that" clause to demonstrate the word "experience". This usage only works for certain nouns. (e.g. There was a chance that I messed up on the exam.)

However, I'm not sure if no.2 is grammatically correct or not. (Of course, no.2 is awkward and unnatural.) I know this usage works for some nouns. (e.g. The problem is that I can't speak English.)

My question is whether this usage, like no.2, is always allowed or can only be used for certain nouns. Would you explain it? Or if you know of a website that explains this kind of usage, please let me know. Thanks!

“The experience is that I visited Japan.” is grammatically correct but sounds awkward. A better way to express this might be: “My experience was visiting Japan.”

⑤ 同格の that

Noun + that-clause
We use a noun + that-clause to express opinions and feelings, often about certainty and possibility. We also use that with reporting nouns. Some nouns commonly used in this way are belief, fact, hope, idea, possibility, suggestion, statement, claim, comment, argument:

He is also having intensive treatment in the hope that he will be able to train on Friday.
Dutch police are investigating the possibility that a bomb was planted on the jet.
