everything は「全て」で、「全体的にどうですか？」と直訳でき、同僚の仕事や状況全体について尋ねることができるフレーズです。

こちらは仕事に特化して尋ねる表現です。How are things? だけだと「最近どう？」というカジュアルな質問になります。
