二項分布は、独立なn回の試行で成功する確率を表す統計的な分布です。各試行は「成功」または「失敗」の二つの結果しかもたらさないときに使用されます。例えば、コイントスのように、各試行で成功する確率が一定（公正なコインでは50％）である事象に対して有用です。具体的には、10回コインを投げて表が出る回数、製品の不良品が出る確率、クリック率の予測などに使用されます。
