pray用於當你非常強烈地希望對方某件事時。用在比較輕鬆的場合時，可能會讓人覺得有點誇張。

也可以用I wish you a safe delivery.（祝你生產順利）這樣用wish來表達。這種說法在想要比較委婉地表達時使用。像上述的wish+you+名詞是作為「祝福」的表現，但像I wish you were here.(我希望你在這裡)這種wish+過去假設語氣時，則是表達幾乎無法實現的願望。
在這種過去假設語氣的情況下，不能用I hope或I pray來替換。
