英文裡有些字看起來超級簡單，可是意思一多，反而讓人抓不住重點。
hold 就是這種字。
你可能會唸出「握住」的意思，但下一秒它可能變成「舉辦」、「維持」，甚至是「認為」。
hold 的很多用法都可以從「握住、維持、保有」這幾個核心概念延伸出去。

① 拿著、抓住
這是最直覺的用法，單純描述用手或身體接觸並抓住某物。
Can you hold this box while I open the door?

He held her hand as they walked along the beach.
（他們沿著海灘散步時，他牽著她的手。）
The toddler held onto the railing tightly.

② 舉辦、舉行
當 hold 的受詞是活動、比賽、會議、婚禮等場合時，常表示「舉辦、舉行」。
The city holds a fireworks show every New Year’s Eve.
（這座城市每年跨年夜都會舉辦煙火秀。）
The exam will be held in the main auditorium.
（這場考試將在主禮堂舉行。）這是被動語態，常用在正式的公告裡。
They decided to hold the wedding outdoors.
（他們決定在戶外舉行婚禮。）
③ 維持、保持
這個意思用來描述某種狀態持續不變。不管是姿勢、領先優勢，還是某種身體狀態，都可以看到這種用法。
Please hold still while I take the photo.
（拍照的時候請保持不動。）
The team managed to hold its lead until the final whistle.
（這支隊伍一直保持領先，直到終場哨聲響起。）
Try to hold your breath for ten seconds.
（試著憋氣十秒鐘。）「hold one’s breath」是固定用法，意思就是「憋氣」。
④ 容納、承受
當主詞是容器、空間、裝置或結構時，hold 常用來表示「容納、裝得下、承受」。
This stadium can hold over fifty thousand fans.

The old shelf couldn’t hold the weight of all those books.

⑤抱持某種看法、觀點或信念
比較正式的用法，常出現在描述立場、看法或信念的句子裡。
Many experts hold the view that the market will recover soon.

⑥ 忍住、抑制
有時候 hold 也用來表達「忍住某種情緒或衝動」，通常會搭配 back 一起出現。
He tried to hold back his tears during the speech.
（他在演講時努力忍住淚水。）
I couldn’t hold back my laughter when he tripped.
（他跌倒的時候，我忍不住笑了出來。）

作為名詞的 Hold
名詞的 hold 用法比較固定，通常會搭配特定的介係詞或動詞出現，建議直接把整組片語記下來。

Hold on, I need to grab my keys before we go.
（等一下，我們出門前我要先拿鑰匙。）打電話的時候也常聽到這句，意思是「請稍候」。
hold up —（撐住、延誤）
Traffic held me up all morning.
（塞車耽誤了我整個早上。）也可以當「撐住、堅持住」用，例如 hold up well 常表示「經得住考驗、維持得很好」。
hold off on —（暫緩、先不要做）
Let’s hold off on making a decision until we get more data.
（在拿到更多資料之前，我們先暫緩做決定。）
hold out —（撐下去、堅持）
The rescue team hoped the survivors could hold out until help arrived.
（救難隊希望倖存者能撐到救援抵達。）
get hold of —（聯絡上某人；取得某物）
I’ve been trying to get hold of him all day, but he’s not answering.
（我一整天都在試著聯絡他，但他都沒接電話。）
take hold of —（抓住、掌握)
She took hold of his arm before he stepped into the street.
（他走到馬路上前，她一把抓住了他的手臂。）
與 hold 語感相近的單字
還有幾個字跟 hold 的某些意思很像，學起來能讓你的表達更多元。
grip
grip 也是「抓住」的意思，但更強調「用力抓緊」的感覺，語氣比 hold 更強烈。
He gripped the steering wheel as the car skidded on the ice.

Fear gripped the entire town after the earthquake.

maintain
maintain 是「維持」的意思，跟 hold 表示「保持某個狀態」的用法很接近。
The company has managed to maintain steady growth for five years.
（這間公司成功維持了五年的穩定成長。）
Maintaining a positive attitude helped the team finish the project on time.
（保持著積極的態度，幫助這個團隊準時完成了專案。）
同一個概念，一句用 hold a lead，一句用 maintain growth，兩者在「讓某個狀態持續下去」這一點上，語感其實非常接近。
contain
contain 是「容納」或「包含」的意思。但表示「容量」時 hold 更自然；contain 更常強調某個容器裡「包含、裝有」什麼。
我們看一下這個例句：這個瓶子最多能裝下兩公升的水。
This bottle can contain up to two liters of water.
This bottle can hold up to two liters of water.
兩句意思幾乎一樣，不過 contain 聽起來稍微正式一點。
