not well known 表示知名度低，這個表達方式很自然。
Our hometown is not so well known. 「我們的家鄉沒有那麼有名。」

如果想表示「和其他相比…」，可以用 not so... as... 「沒有像…那麼…」。
He is not so well known as his brother. 「他的知名度不如他哥哥。」

順帶一提，談到「有名」，並不是所有情況下都適合使用 famous。
famous 通常用於「好的名聲」（這個詞源於名詞 fame「名聲」）。
He is a famous singer. 「他是一位知名的歌手。」

相反地，如果是「惡名昭彰」這樣的負面名聲，可以用 notorious 這個詞。
He is notorious for his bad behavior. 「他因行為不良而臭名昭著。」

若單純想表達「廣為人知」，通常會用 well known。
It is a well known fact. 「這是眾所周知的事實。」
