首先來表達超出想像的這部分。
可以用 more than I expected (I thought) 表達。

I gave up unwillingly（reluctantly）because the hurdle (goal) is higher than I expected (I thought).
因為目標比我想像的還要高，所以我只能忍痛放棄。
可以這樣表達。

「含淚」表達「其實不想但出於無奈」的感受對吧？
英文可以用 unwillingly 或 reluctantly 表達出「不情願地；勉強地」的感覺。
