「off」在這裡有「在舞台外」的意思。
「onstage」則是「在舞台上」。
舞台兩側、觀眾看不見的遮幕區域稱為「wing」。由於左右各有一側，所以會用複數形「wings」。在機場等地方，因為通道像翅膀一樣展開，也會用北側翼、南側翼等方式來表達。
