In contrast to that 和 In comparison to that 這兩個片語皆用於進行比較，但在語感上有差異。

In contrast to that 是表示兩個事物或情況有明顯的不同。主要用於強調對比或對照。

另一方面，In comparison to that 則用於比較兩個事物或情況，指出它們的相似處或不同之處。比較的程度不一定要很大。

・while

meanwhile 或 while 表示「相對地」、「另一方面」的意思，可用於比較同時發生的兩件事情。這兩者很相似，但詞性不同。

meanwhile 是副詞，因此不能像連接詞那樣連接兩個句子。使用上第一個句子要用句號結束，再把 meanwhile放在第二個句子的開頭。

＊He is a popular musician among men. Meanwhile, quite a few women dislike him.
＊他是一個頗受男性歡迎的音樂家，另一方面，相當多的女性討厭他。

・popular　　　　　「受歡迎的」、「大眾的」
・among　　　　　 「在～之間」
among 後面要接複數名詞。它必須用在三個（或三人）以上的情況。
・quite a few　　　　 「相當多的」、「不少的」
・dislike　　　　　　 「討厭」

while 是連接詞，因此可以放在兩個句子中間作為連接。

＊The weather will be rough in Taitung due to a front,
　while intense heat will last in Kaohsiung due to high pressure.
　（while 在這裡起到連接兩個句子的作用）
＊台東的天氣受鋒面影響會非常惡劣，但另一方面，高雄則受高氣壓影響會持續酷熱。

・rough　　　　　「（海象或天氣）惡劣的」　
・due to～　　　　「因為～」、「受到～影響」
・front　　　　　　「鋒面」
這裡的「鋒面」指的是冷鋒、暖鋒等氣象專業名詞。

・intense heat　　「酷熱」、「炎熱」
intense「強烈的」（形容詞）＋　heat「熱」（名詞）

・last　　　　　　　「持續」（動詞）
・high pressure 　　「高氣壓」（low pressure「低氣壓」）

其實在實際說話時，很難分辨是一句話還是兩句，但記住文法上的正確用法還是比較好。
