說實話，筆者以前在美劇裡聽到有人說 That’s so messed up! 的時候，總是感到一頭霧水。
後來才發現，mess up 是一個用途非常廣的口語表達，幾乎每部美劇裡都聽得到。
本篇文章我們就來看看 mess up 的意思，同時也會介紹在現實生活中也很常出現的常見用法。
mess up 的意思
先從基礎開始。 mess up 可以當名詞，也可以當動詞用。
當名詞時，指的是「混亂」、「爛攤子」或「失敗的狀況」。當動詞時，則是「把事情搞砸」、「弄壞」、「毀掉」的意思。
實際對話中，動詞用法更常見。只要記住一個核心概念：不管是哪種用法，mess up 通常都帶有負面含義。事情出了問題、人狀態很糟，或環境一片混亂，都可以用它來描述。下面就一個一個來看。
1. 太扯了、太不合理了
第一種用法，是用來表達某件事「荒謬」、「不可理喻」或「根本不公平」。
中文裡我們會說「這也太過分了吧」、「這什麼情況」，英文裡對應的就是 That’s messed up 。通常是聽到朋友分享一件很離譜的遭遇時，你第一個脫口而出的反應。
A: I was five minutes late to work today, and my boss called me out in front of everyone at the meeting.
（我今天上班遲到五分鐘，結果主管直接在全體會議上點名批評我。）
B: Are you serious? That’s completely messed up. He could’ve just talked to you privately.
（你說真的？這也太誇張了。他大可以私下跟你說就好。）
She found out her best friend had been lying to her for years. That’s seriously messed up.
（她發現她最好的朋友騙了她好幾年。這真的很過分。）

2. 整個人狀態很差、情緒一團亂
第二種用法，是形容一個人「整個人垮掉了」或「狀態很不好」。
這裡特別要注意：主詞必須是「人」，不能用來描述事物。通常是指一個人在經歷重大打擊之後，情緒和精神都很低落的狀態。
A: Have you talked to Kevin lately? He seems to have disappeared since his breakup.
（你最近有聯絡 Kevin 嗎？他感覺從上次分手後就消失了。）
B: He’s been pretty messed up since the breakup. Doesn’t really talk to anyone.
（他自從分手後整個人狀態都很差。幾乎不跟人說話。）

3. 一團亂、問題一堆
第三種用法，用來形容某個地方、某件事或某個情況「亂七八糟」、「狀況百出」。
mess 本身就有「混亂」的意思，所以 messed up 用來描述事物時，常帶有一片混亂、結構有問題、怎麼看都不對勁的感覺。
A: I’ve read this proposal three times, and I still can’t follow the logic.
（這份提案我看了三遍，還是看不懂它的邏輯在哪裡。）
B: Because the whole structure is messed up. He needs to start over from scratch.
（因為整個架構就是亂的。他需要從頭重來。）

→ Have you seen the storage room? This place is a total disaster. Nobody’s cleaned it in months.

4. 喝掛了、整個人不對勁
第四種用法，是指一個人喝醉了，或整個人神智不清。
這個用法非常口語，通常用在熟人之間。
A: How was the party last night?
（昨晚的派對怎麼樣？）
B: I don’t even remember getting home. I was completely messed up by midnight.
（我完全不記得怎麼回家的。午夜之前我就已經喝掛了。）

be wasted（喝得爛醉／醉到不省人事）
→ He had like ten drinks in two hours. He was absolutely wasted by the end of the night.

be out of it（整個人恍神／神智不清)
→ She only had two glasses but she was already totally out of it. I think she hadn’t eaten all day.

5. 被打得很慘、傷得不輕
messed up 也可以用來描述一個人「被打得很慘」或「受了很重的傷」。
這個用法在描述打架、意外或激烈衝突時比較常見。
A: Did you hear about Marcus?
（你有聽說 Marcus 的事嗎？）
B: Apparently he got into a fight outside the bar. He was pretty messed up when the ambulance arrived.
（聽說他在酒吧外面打架了。救護車到的時候他已經傷得很重了。）

6. 把事情搞砸了
最後這個，也是日常使用頻率最高的一種：把事情搞砸、出包、弄錯。
當動詞用時，mess up 語氣自然、常見，在日常對話裡非常實用。
A: Did you turn in your report?
（你那份報告交了嗎？）
B: I messed up the data in the last section and had to redo the whole thing at midnight.
（我最後一部分的數據弄錯了，結果半夜得整份重做。）
A: How did the meeting with the client go?
（你跟那個客戶的會議怎麼樣？）
B: Don’t ask. I messed up the whole presentation. I had the wrong slides.
