想用英文表達「很多」時，大家會怎麼說呢？如果是正在學英文的人，大概都會想到「many」、「much」或「a lot of」單字吧。

雖然3個都是「很多」的意思，但它們之間還是存在著一些差異。如果沒有事先好好理解後再使用，可能會誤用而造成聽起來很奇怪的結果，因此必須要注意。

所以這次我想要來說明「many」、「much」和「a lot of」的差別。另外還會介紹其他表示「很多」的英文，請大家一定要看到最後喔！

 

many / much / a lot of的差別

 

大致上總結一下「many」、「much」和「a lot of」的差別，如下所示:

many：用在可數名詞
much：用在不可數名詞
a lot of：可數・不可數名詞都可以

接著就來詳細地了解一下吧。

 

many的意思和用法

 

「many」用於可數名詞，表示「很多的~」。

可數的人事物稱為可數名詞，而它和「many」的組合如下所示: 

many people
很多人

many books
很多書

many shops
很多店

上面舉例的「人」、「書」或「店」都是可數名詞，所以是用「many」。

反過來說，如果用在不可數名詞上就會變得很奇怪。

×many water
「water（水）」為不可數

×many money
「money（金錢）」為不可數

×many information
「information（資訊）」為不可數

另外，在日常對話中，「many」多用在否定句或疑問句（How many 〜?）中。如果用在肯定句中的話，就會聽起來有點太正式了。

不過，請記住在以下的情況中，即使是肯定句也可以用「many」。

much 的意思和用法

 

「much」是用在不可數的事物上，表示「很多的…」意思的單字。

不可數名詞和「much」的組如下所示: 

much water
很多的水

much money
很多錢

much information
很多的資訊

上面提到的「水」或「金錢」、「資訊」等都是表示數量的名詞，所以可以用「much」。

反過來說，如果用在可數名詞的話就會顯得不自然，這點請注意。

「people（人）」為可數

×much books
很多書
「books（書）」為可數

×much shops
很多店
「shops（店鋪）」為可數

和「many」一樣，在日常對話中，「much」多用在否定句或疑問句中。如果用在肯定句中的話，就會聽起來有點太正式了。

a lot of 的意思和用法

 

「a lot of」可以用於可數或不可數名詞。

它比起「many」和「much」還要沒那正式，而且因為不需要考慮可數・不可數名詞，所以基本上日常對話中用「a lot of」就不會有問題了。

 

可數名詞的情況

 

a lot of people
很多人

a lot of books
很多書

a lot of shops
很多店

 

不可數名詞的情況

 

a lot of water
很多水

a lot of money
很多錢

a lot of information
很多資訊

不過請注意，如果是「a lot of」的話，就不能用像「so many/much」、「too many/much」或「as many/much」一樣的組合了。

×so a lot of cups
◯so many cups

×too a lot of coffee
◯too much coffee

另外，「lots of」的意思也和「a lot of」一樣。而因為「lots of」聽起來比較隨意，所以需要注意使用的對象。

I ate a lot of beef today.
我今天吃了很多牛肉。

A lot of people tell me that I’m good at teaching.
很多人都說我很會教學。

I slept a lot last night.
我昨晚睡得很飽。

plenty of

 

「plenty of」是「十分充足的量〜」或「比起必要的數量還要多〜」的意思。

和「a lot of」一樣，可以用於可數、不可數名詞。

We still have plenty of time until the live show starts.
在現場表演開始前，我們還有很充足的時間。

I have plenty of money to survive without working for some years.
我有足夠的錢可以維持幾年不工作的生活。

 

a number of

 

「a number of」表示「數量很多〜」。

因為它用了「number」這個單字，所以只能用於可數名詞。

此外，它很容易和「the number of 〜（〜的數量）」 搞混，這點也請注意。

There are a number of people in front of the building.
那棟大樓的前面有很多人。

I planted a number of plants today.
我今天種了很多植物。

 

a bunch of

 

「a bunch of」和「a lot of」一樣，是表示「很多的〜」，可用於可數或不可數名詞。

不過，「a bumch of」比起「a lot of」還要來的口語一點。

I talked to a bunch of people yesterday.
我昨天和很多人說話了。

I bought a bunch of snacks for the party.
為了派對，我買了很多的零食。

 

a load of

 

「a load of」也和「a lot of」、「a bunch of」一樣，為「很多的〜」，可用於可數、不可數名詞。

和「a lot of」相比，「a load of」聽起來比較口語。另外，用「loads of」的話，感覺又更輕鬆隨意了。

I carried a load of apples.
我運送了很多蘋果。

I’ve got loads of things to do this afternoon.
我今天下午要做的事情很多。

 

a ton of

 

「a ton of」也和「a load of」一樣，是「a lot of」比較口語的版本。可用於可算、不可數名詞。

不過，相較之下「a ton of」聽起來的數量又更多了一些。

還有，請記住「tons of」是又更輕鬆隨意的表現。

I drank a ton of beer last night.
我昨晚喝了很多啤酒。

My grandmother sent me tons of rice.
我奶奶送了很多米給我。

 

numerous

 

「numerous」是「大量的〜」的意思，用於可數名詞。

雖然它和「many」很像，不過因為聽起來比較正式，所以在新聞英文中常常出現。

Numerous people gathered and protested on the street.
很多人聚集在街上抗議。

Numerous foreign tourists visited our facility this year.
今年很多的外國觀光客參觀了我們的設施。

 

countless

 

「countless」表示「數量多到數不清」。

基本上用於可數名詞。

There are countless jobs in the world.
世界上有數不清的職業。

There are countless stars in the sky.
天空中有數不清的星星。
