「相反的」的意思是什麼？

查閱字典中「反」這個字時，發現可包含以下 5 種意思：

①方向、順序、位置等相反。顛倒。
例：那個東西，方向相反了。
②（以「相反的」的形式）與預想或期待的方向相反。反而。
例：我以為天氣會變好，相反的卻變壞了。
③「不是○○反而是××」的意思。
例：「謝謝你，反而讓你費心了，真不好意思」
例：「哪裡，一點也不麻煩，反而幫了大忙，謝謝你」
④「換句話說、反過來說」的意思。
例：這是出乎意料的困境，但反過來說，只要度過難關我們就贏了。
⑤作為語用標記（反問／回球）
A：「晚餐吃牛排怎麼樣？」
B：「我反而覺得披薩比較好」
A：「是嗎？」
B：「那我反問你，為什麼想吃牛排？」
在沒有明顯對立或相反語義的情況下，用來提出對案或反問、接續談話的語用標記。
有時可以用「乾脆」、「倒不如」、「另一方面」等詞彙直接替換；有時則幾乎不承擔實質語意，即使不說，句子的意思也不會有明顯改變。
雖然有時被視為用語混亂，不過不只是在朋友之間的隨口對話，似乎在商務場合也有人在用。

① 方向、順序、位置等相反。顛倒。

the other way around

Don’t put a battery in the other way around.
（電池不要裝反了。）

不僅可以用於物理上的顛倒，也可以用於以下這類內容。

I thought she needed me, but in truth it was the other way around.
（我以為她需要我，但事實卻相反。）（是我需要她）

the other way

He walked the other way.
（他朝著相反的方向走去了。）

也可以這樣表達：

She went in the opposite direction of the school.
（她朝著與學校相反的方向走去。）

the other way 比 direction 更加口語化。

the wrong way

He twisted my hand the wrong way.
（他把我的手往反方向扭。）

the wrong way 通常不加前置詞而以副詞的方式使用。

除了「相反的」之外，也可以用這個來表示「錯誤地」或「往壞的方向」這樣的情況。

contrary

Let’s go contrary to common practice this time.
（這次我們就反其道而行吧。）

opposite

Their views were completely opposite.
（他們的看法完全相反。）

在搜尋英文單字的反義詞時，也可以用 What is the opposite (word) of ○? 來查。

慣用語 opposite poles 表示「處於對立面」，opposite personalities 則表示「性格相反」。

reverse

Reverse the order of the alphabet.
（把字母的順序反轉。）

當你想表達「左右相反」時可以使用這個表達：

In a mirror, images are reversed left and right.
（在鏡子裡，左右的像是相反的。）

My position and his were reversed.
（他和我的立場相反。）

We rode the four attractions in the reverse order from last time.
（我們按照與上次相反的順序遊玩了 4 個遊樂設施。）

in the reverse order from 可以替換為 in the opposite order of。

turn ~ upside down

My sister turned a box full of toys upside down.
（我妹妹把裝滿玩具的盒子翻相反了。）

把 upside（上面）轉向 down（下面）就變成了相反的方向。

除了 turn 之外，還可以和其他詞彙一起使用。

The painting on the wall was hung upside down.
（牆上的畫掛反了。）

inside out

Your socks are inside out.
（你的襪子裡外相反了。）

這個和 upside down 是一樣的概念。

inside（裡面）變成了 out（外面）的狀態。

可以表達襯衫、褲子等衣物的「反面」。

當看到小孩衣服穿反時，就可以笑著這麼說。

backward

He sometimes wears his cap backwards.
（他有時候會把帽子反戴。）

這是 forward 的反義副詞。

vice versa

We work to live, and not vice versa.
（我們是為了生活而工作，相反則不然。）

When he wants to go out, she wants to be at home, and vice versa.
（當他想出門時，她想待在家裡，反之亦然。）

A parent can be a good example to his or her child, but not vice versa.
（父母可以成為孩子的好榜樣，但相反則不然。）

vice versa「反之亦然」是不是和其他英文單字感覺有點不同呢？

就像 etc. 和 cf. 一樣，這是源自拉丁語的詞彙。

② 與預想或期待的方向相反。反而。

on the contrary、on the other hand

I thought the weather would be better, but on the contrary it became worse.
（我以為天氣會變好，但反而變壞了。）

除了on the contrary 之外，on the other hand 也可以使用，但這兩者並不相等，存在差異。

on the other hand 可以對比兩個不相矛盾的內容。

例如這樣的情況：

The job wasn’t interesting, but ○○ it was well paid.
（那份工作不有趣，但另一方面薪水很不錯。）

○○可以填入 on the other hand，但不能填入 on the contrary。

contrary to~

I took the medicine, but contrary to expectations, I got worse.
（我吃了藥，但與預期相反，症狀反而惡化了。）

contrary to 的位置也可以用 against 代替。

後面除了expectations 之外，以常會接 popular belief 等。

opposite

Our efforts to improve the situation seemed to have had the opposite effect.
（我們為了改善局面所做的努力似乎起了反作用。）

表達 ① 中也出現過的 opposite，在這裡也可以使用。

而 opposite 也可以用 reverse 代替。

instead

I thought I would make a lot of money, but instead I sank deeper into debt.
（我以為能賺大錢，但相反地陷入了更深的債務。）

③「反而是我不好意思」、「反而要謝謝你」

Thank you, or rather sorry to make you bother.
（謝謝你，反而讓你費心了，真不好意思）

A, or rather B 表示「與其說A不如說B」、「不僅不是A，反而B」的意思。

It’s not a trouble, but rather a help. Thank you.
（哪裡，一點都不麻煩，反而幫了大忙，謝謝你）

在英文文法中的 not A but B「不是A而是B」上加上有「反而、不僅如此」意思的rather。

兩個例子都使用了 rather。在海外，人們會確實地向對方傳達感謝之意。如果能在日常對話中自然地說出這樣的句子會很棒呢。

④「相反地」「換句話說」、「反過來說」

conversely

We are in an unexpected pinch. Conversely, we’ll win if we get out of it.
（這是出乎意料的困境，但反過來說，只要度過難關我們就贏了。）

Cactus need little water to grow. Conversely, too much water will wither up the plant.
（仙人掌只需要少量的水就能生長；相反地，水分過多反而會讓植物枯萎。）

用來表達「換個角度來看」等情境時非常恰當，而且語氣偏正式，因此也很適合用在論文中。

在這種用法下，先記住 conversely 這個單字，當成一種句型模式來掌握就可以了。

⑤ 為語用標記（反問／回球）

A ：I want to eat steak for dinner.
A：晚餐吃牛排怎麼樣？
B ：I feel like pizza, instead
B：我反而覺得披薩比較好
A ：Do you?
A：是嗎？
B Let me ask you, why steak?

這種用法，是在沒有什麼特別的對立關係或相反情況的時候使用。

英文的話會像是這樣表達。

在這個例子中，instead 和 Let me ask you 是與「反而」相對應的部分，也有很多情況是在中文語境中已經沒有太多意義，似乎沒有特定對應的英文。

也有拼法相同的動詞，converse（對話）。

形容詞 converse 是「相反的意見或信念等」的意思，是正式用語。

副詞 conversely 的用法在表達 ④ 中介紹過了。

順便說一下，美國有一個叫 Converse 的品牌，據說是以經營者的名字命名的。

所以並不是特別表示什麼相反的意思。

inverse（形容詞、名詞）　inversely（副詞）

「位置、方向、傾向相反，顛倒（從後到前、從右到左、從下到上等）」的意思。

表示在「方向、傾向」這一點相反。「反比」是 inverse proportion。

在這裡是用 inverse 這個字來表示相反的。

A is in inverse proportion to B.
（A與B成反比）

A and B are in inverse proportion.
（A和B是反比關係）

副詞是 inversely，主要用在「反比例」這類意義上的「反」。
