”a number of”和”the number of” 看起來很像，但它們的含義與用法卻大不相同，相似之處可說是幾乎沒有。

本篇文章將針對”a number of”和”the number of”的含義與用法之間的差別做說明。

”the number of”的含義

“a number of”的解說比較複雜，所以我們先從比較簡單的 ”the number of”開始吧！

“the number of” 大多可以翻譯為「～的數量」。

– The number of English learners in Taiwan has increased.
（在台灣學習英語的人增加了。）

”the number of”的使用方法

接著來說明”the number of”的使用方式。正如剛剛所說的，”the number of”可以翻譯為「～的數量」。

”The number of X is ~.” 「X的數量是～。」像這樣的句子結構是很常見的。

– The number of students in the class is 40.
（這一班的學生人數是40人。）

“the number of”的使用關鍵是其動詞必須為單數形。例如剛剛的例句，- The number of English learners in Taiwan has increased. 其動詞為單數形的”has increased” 而不是”have increased”。

– The number (of English learners in Taiwan) has increased. （of English learners in Taiwan）修飾了”The number”。

另一則例句

– The number of students in the class is 40.

跟剛剛一樣，這則例句的主要結構是“The number is 40.” 「(人數)數量是40。」其主詞為The number，因此動詞須為單數形。

此外要注意的是，這裡的名詞Ｘ通常不需要加上“the”。這是什麼意思呢？

– The number of [the] students in the class is 40. 的這個[the]是多餘的。必須寫做

– The number of students in the class is 40. 才是正確的。

”a number of”的含義

接著我們來看看”a number of”的含義。

你可能以前在學校時就學過“a number of”的意思是「一些」。在大部分的英英辭典中，a number of 被解釋為 several （一些、複數的）。

但在《Clollins》這個辭典裡，a number of 也被解釋為 various（各式各樣的）。

關於這一點，讓我們更詳細的看下去吧。

”a number of”＝several

承如上所述，大多數的辭典將”a number of” 解釋為”several”、也就是以「好幾個、複數的」為主的意思作註解。

I’ve decided to learn English for a number of reasons.
（我因為幾個理由決定學英語。）

“a”和“the”的不同解釋了為什麼“a number of”的意思是“好幾個”。這是因為”the”有著「特定性」，而”a”沒有特定性。

“the”經常被翻譯為「那個」，而”a”則被翻作「(有)一個」。

因此，上述例句 “a number of reasons”  並沒有一個特定的數量，可能有2個原因，也可能有10個原因。總而言之，只知道「有著複數的理由」這樣子的感覺被表達著。

並且不是 ”a reason”，而是”reasons”。

• 有複數個原因
• 不只有一個原因

這樣的意思被透露著。

因此 – I’ve decided to learn English for a number of reasons. 「我學習英語的原因 （無法具體說明到底有幾個原因，但總之不只有一個原因）有好幾個）。」我們可以這樣子作理解。

”a number of”＝various

學習英語時，把”a number of”理解為”many”（很多）的人有很多。其實，筆者自己以前也這是這麼認為了很多年。

關於這點，在研究了許多不同的文獻後，我發現它非常微妙。多方查證後，其實大部分的辭典將”a number of”解釋為”several”（一些, 幾個），反而沒有”many”（很多）的意思。

而前述所提的《Collins》辭典更將其解釋為”in the sense of various”（各式各樣的），以及”several different”（複數差異）。

同時在這個解釋上，“many”被舉為它的同義詞。再參考其他文獻，又或者實際請教英語會話的老師時，

・對美國人來說 ”a number of”＝”many”
・以文章前後文來看，意思經常等同”many”

因此，”a number of”＝”many” 也不一定是錯的喔。根據國家、地區、情況或個人的因素，“很多”的這個含義，有時也是適當而正確的。

稍後會介紹到的“a large number of”這一類的說法也都用來表示“很多”，所以當自己想要表達“很多”的時候，可以用像這樣的說法比較不容易出錯。

因為當我們是聽者或讀者的角色時，需藉由上下文來判斷a number of 到底是“複數個”的意思，還是“很多很多”的意思。

”a number of”的使用方法

使用“a number of”時，須特別注意它伴隨著的是複數形的動詞。

相較於主詞是「數量」，使用單數形動詞的 “the number of”，

“a number of”嚴格來說是“a number of X”中“X”的其中一部分，也就是説其主詞是複數的人或物。

讓我們一邊看看下面的例子一邊理解吧。

”a number of”的基本使用方法

為了了解“a number of” 的基本使用方法，我們先看看下面的例句。

– There were a number of causes for the accident.（引用：Cambridge Dictionary）
（造成這起事故的原因有好幾個。）

這裡 ”a number of”修飾了”causes”（＝原因）。

– There were (a number of) causes (for the accident).

也就是說，句子的主結構是 “There were causes.” 因此使用were 而非was。

把這個和”a lot of”（很多）想成一樣的話，就能很容易理解。

– There are a lot of problems / people.
（有很多問題 / 人。）

雖然“a lot of”中也有著表示「一個」的冠詞“a”，但它的動詞也是使用“are”。此外，“a number of”通常不用於疑問句或否定句喔。

【應用篇】”a large/huge number of”

上面“a number of”的基本用法中，解釋過了文法的部分。 接下來是一些關於”a number of”的應用方式。

首先介紹的是 ”a large/huge number of” 。

“large”跟”huge”都有「很大的」「巨大的」的意思，同時也有著「很多」的意味。

– A large number of people have applied for the job.
（很多人應徵了那個工作。）
※apply for：應徵（工作）

如果應徵人數少，可以使用”small”。

– A small number of people have applied for the job.
（很少人應徵了那個工作。）

只是，跟中文「只有很少的人」語感相似，在”small”之前加上“just”更為自然。

-Just a small number of people have applied for the job.
需要注意的是，雖然我們用數字大小來表示「多和少」，但”big”和”little” 不適用於此句型。

【應用篇】”numbers of”

除了 “a number of”，用”numbers of”也是可以的，只是通常不單獨使用，而是在“numbers”前加上形容詞來作使用。

• large numbers of ~
• huge numbers of ~
• great numbers of ~

– Great numbers of people gathered at the event.
（一大群人聚集在活動現場。）

【應用篇】”quite a number of”

“Quite a number of”也是「很多」的意思。

– Quite a number of cases of the flu have been reported already.（引用：Cambridge Dictionary）
（已經報告了相當多的流感病例。）

”any number of”同樣也是「很多」的意思。

– Any number of students come to school by bus.
（很多學生搭巴士上學。）
